This is our mission.

Cultivating Hope curates safe and healthy spaces for the community to re-imagine education.

What We Do

Cultivating Hope creates a welcoming space for individuals of all backgrounds and ages to heal from trauma and reimagine their futures. Our methodology fosters culturally inviting practices that promote both personal and community healing. We integrate restorative justice, social-emotional learning, and indigenous community circles into all our programming, ensuring that every voice matters.

Restorative Justice (RJ)

We focus on making amends rather than assigning blame. We help individuals reintegrate into the community and equip them with the skills to build brighter futures.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

By emphasizing the importance of positive relationships, our programs empower students to develop essential skills for navigating both school and life, creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

Indigenous Community Circles

We celebrate diversity by inviting different perspectives to the table. Our circles provide a nurturing space often absent in traditional settings, allowing participants to share openly and honestly without fear of judgment. This openness fosters trust and deepens connections, enabling richer learning experiences.

Our Why

We started this organization because we believe that talking isn’t enough. True learning goes beyond lectures—it’s about action, experience, and growth. To truly reorient schools toward being student-centered, we need to create environments where students feel safe to make mistakes. When kids know it's okay to fail, they’re free to explore, grow, and build resilience.

It’s not about isolating each student as they navigate their learning journey alone. It’s about bringing the community together, so every voice, every perspective, enriches the learning experience. That’s where our 7 core principles come in: building community, competing, empowering students to teach one another, sharing responsibility, reflecting deeply, playing, and creating solutions. These are the building blocks for resilient, confident learners.

This belief in community and shared growth is at the heart of everything we do. Barak Bomani, co-founder of Cultivating Hope, Inc., beautifully captures the transformative experience of a Community Circle in the poem below. It reflects how connection, trust, and healing come to life in these spaces.

Community Circle

It’s a sacred space.
Where people take chances.
Being themselves.
Vulnerability.
Silliness.
Anger. Tears and sometimes Shouts.
Laughter. Joy. Hope all about.
We give voice
To be heard above the rest.
Get whatever it is off your chest.
Ago. Ame.
One mic. Many ears.
Respect the spoken word of your peers.
Encourage the voyage.
Enjoy the trip.
Speak life, not death.
So that we can all live.
Topics teach. Hearts see.
Sometimes we are topic free.
Feel the beat of the rhythm.
Inhale the breath of the morning.
Dance with the discomfort of noon.
Eat from the garden we grow.
Commune.
